Catholic University
After moving to Brookland, Adams Morgan Stained Glass was commissioned in 2006 by nearby Catholic University to restore five 1888 Mayer of Munich, 12 foot painted figure windows in the apse. The original theology school in Caldwell Hall, designed by prolific D.C. German architect Adolph Cluss, like most Catholic institutions, preferred painted European stained glass over typical American stained glass. These German windows are a good example of that preference. These 5 very large images of the life of Christ are quite unique as they were designed by Mayer’s son-in-law Zettler.
The 118 year old windows were in disintegrated condition and each one removed in 4 sections. Crayon rubbings recorded the design on paper to keep track of each piece of glass and a layout for rebuilding them back to original configuration. Each section was then submerged in hot, soapy water to remove cementing and soften the lead for dismantling. Each piece of glass was then cleaned and reassembled on the rubbings with fresh, strong lead. This process totally re-secured the stained glass to immaculate condition and then each section was raised onto the scaffolding to be reinstalled in the original wood frames in the chapel.
